A former Davenports pub standing at an isolated rural road junction south-east of Birmingham. In the pre-motorway era the main road it is on was an important route for bypassing the conurbation. It is still open on StreetView in 2023.

The Punch Bowl
An old pub in the fork of two roads at the top end of the town, which is rumoured to have secret tunnels. It never reopened after lockdown, and is now set to be converted into an eight-bedroom house.
The Crown
A handsome three-storeyed redbrick pub on the approach to Nuneaton station. It is one of a pair of closed pubs with the Railway Tavern, which will be featured in a later post.
The Prince of Wales
A pub at the westernmost extent of the borough of Solihull in the south Birmingham suburbs, which most recently traded under the Sizzling Pubs brand. It has recently been declared an “eyesore”and trashed by vandals. There are plans to build a £9 million care home on the site.
The Wylde Green
Another large inter-wars West Midlands pub set in a leafy suburban area. Local residents are unhappy with plans to redevelop the site as an “overwhelming” four-storey complex of retirement apartments.
The Kingsholme
A handsome mock-Tudor pub just outside the town’s inner ring road, still bearing Ansell’s livery. Originally called the Coach & Horses. Be careful not to jump the red light!
The Grapes
A characteristic large inter-wars pub on the north side of the city, where several attempts to redevelop the site as flats have so far been rejected.
The Great Western
An ornate Victorian pub at the entrance to Warwick station, now an an advanced state of dereliction.
The Barge & Bridge
A free-standing pub with a hint of Tudor styling in its architecture, situated between the canal and the railway. Since the photo was taken it has been demolished. It was originally called the Westwood House Hotel.
The Old Bull & Butcher
A small roadside pub on the main road from Coventry to Banbury, near to the site of the former Rootes/Chrysler/Peugeot car plant, which appears in its last years to have become an Indian restaurant.
The Navigation
A large white-painted canalside pub on the eastern edge of the town. Pictured on a damp, miserable day, this one looks particularly sad and forlorn and seems to sum up the plight of pubs in Britain today. It has since been renovated to provide a very smart-looking private house.
The Rose & Woodbine
An unusually-named pub with an ornate frontage dating from 1898 situated just outside the Inner Ring Road.
The Boot
A sizeable pub in a rather off-the-beaten-track Warwickshire village close to the M42 that has fallen by the wayside despite acquiring a trendy modern paint job and lettering. Its prospects can’t have been helped by the presence of the more traditional-looking Hatters Arms next door.
The Dun Cow
An impressive inter-wars roadhouse, now in a sadly derelict state. It went through a spell as Crazy Daisy’s nightclub before ending up as the Goji Chinese restaurant.
The Pilot
Yet another magnificent inter-wars Midlands roadhouse-cum-estate pub on the north side of Coventry.
The Stoneleigh Arms
A small former Banks’s pub just south of the centre of this Midlands spa town which is much less upmarket than often imagined.
