A four-square Edwardian pub in a prosperous village south of Chester close to the River Dee. The asking price has been reduced by £150,000, but it is being suggested that the property would be suitable for alternative use.
The Waterwheel
A remarkable pub occupying most of the ground floor of a thirteen-storey block of flats on the east side of the town centre. The block is still there, but is now protected by a gate and fence.
The Royal
A four-square, brick-built pub with tall chimneys facing some functional early post-war flats on the south-east side of the town. It has since been replaced by a plain terrace of four modern houses.
The Dog & Partridge
A substantial pub on the main A6 road through this well-populated village a few miles south-east of Stockport. For some years it was a Brewer’s Fayre, before making the journey down through the dining pub brands to end up a Crown Carvery.
The Ash Brow
A small stone-built street-corner pub alongside the main Bradford Road on the north side of the town. Now the Mumbai Spice Indian restaurant.
The Station
A plain redbrick roadside pub in a village to the west o Bishop Auckland, which has been empty for over a decade, and which local residents are now describing as a monstrosity.
The Wilmot Arms
A substantial pub in a village on the old main road between Derby and Nottingham, which suffered from a bad reputation and is now to be demolished and converted into two houses.
The Hobby Horse
A modern estate-style pub built by John Smith’s on the north side of the city in the shadow of towering blocks of flats, now heavily graffitied.
The Fleece
A redbrick pub in the Jacobean style adjacent to the site of the now-demolished Thwaites brewery. There are now plans to demolish the adjoining office building and repurpose the pub itself.
The Raynville
A substantial post-war estate pub in the Bramley district on the western side of the city. It has since been demolished and replaced with some unusually attractive modern terraced housing.
The Gardeners Arms
A rather imposing gable-fronted late Victorian or Edwardian pub tucked away in an out-of-the-way location on the eastern side of the town in the shadow of disused mills. It has now been transformed into a luxury five-bed home, but you do have to wonder how many potential buyers would want to live in such a spot.
The Ovenden Way Hotel
A substantial inter-wars pub on a rather bleak estate on the north-west side of the town. It has since been demolished and the site is now a vacant lot.
