The Railway Tavern

The Railway Tavern, Crowborough, Sussex

A four-square street corner pub belonging to Shepherd Neame, unsurprisingly situated opposite the town’s railway station, still open on StreetView. A name change from the more distinctive Welcome Stranger obviously failed to revive its fortunes.

The Downsman

The Downsman, Hove, Sussex

A cottage-style inter-wars pub with a steeply-pitched roof and dormer windows, in an estate on the north side of the town close to the South Downs. It has since been demolished to be replaced by housing.

The King’s Head

The King’s Head, Ore, East Sussex

A substantial white-painted roadside pub situated to the east of Hastings. The pub itself isn’t boarded up, but the extensive car park is fenced off – surely ripe for residential redevelopment.

The Grapes

The Grapes, Pease Pottage, Sussex

A former King & Barnes pub on a bypassed section of the A23 Brighton Road, taken over and closed by Hall & Woodhouse and demolished and replaced by housing since the picture was taken. See here for more information.

The Royal Oak

The Royal Oak, Beckley, East Sussex

A cottage-style pub with some mock-Tudor detailing standing in the fork of two roads in a rural, but fairly prosperous, location between Rye and Bodiam Castle.

The Pump House

The Pump House, Cooksbridge, East Sussex

A whitewashed Victorian pub right opposite Cooksbridge Station, a few miles north of Lewes. The sign says “Sold for Redevelopment”.
