The Three Horseshoes
A neat late Victorian or Edwardian pub with a distinctive gabled frontage, located in a former mining village close to the M1. A planning application has been submitted to convert the building into apartments, but retaining a small bar in the front of the property.

The Wheel Inn
A substantial three-storey pub situated on the main street of this attractive village close to Calke Abbey. It closed in 2020, although the owning company have promised a major refurbishment.
The Melbourne Arms
A tall, narrow pub in a characteristic Midlands style, situated on the south-western side of the town, that appears to be in the process of being converted to residential use.
The Newlands Inn
A pub situated below the level of the roadway on a back road between Alfreton and Ripley in the Derbyshire coalfield. It closed in 2007 and has since been converted to residential use. It gives its name to a station on the preserved Midland Railway – Butterley, which runs close by.
The Bull’s Head
A monumental stone-built former Marston’s pub at the top of the town on the road to Chapel-en-le-Frith (now the A6), that most recently traded as Imani’s Restaurant.
The Cock’n’Bull
A large inter-wars pub in the Sinfin district on the southern side of the city, it was originally built in 1934 as the Sinfin Hotel, and later renamed as the Saxon. Demolished between 2012 and 2014, there are now plans to build a Sikh temple on the site.
The Station Hotel
An impressive Edwardian pub-com-hotel on the west side of the town centre opposite the long-closed station, that is currently in the process of being converted to flats.

The Blacksmith’s Arms
A plain-looking pub standing below the level of the road at a rural crossroads south-east of Sheffield. Planning permission has been granted for it to be demolished and replace by a house and shop.
The Wilmot Arms
A substantial pub in a village on the old main road between Derby and Nottingham, which suffered from a bad reputation and is now to be demolished and converted into two houses.
The Devonshire
A small Victorian back-street pub on the north side of the town.
The Holly Bush
A surprisingly extensive village pub in the South Derbyshire coalfield. When open, it butted on to a pair of new-build houses, and has now been entirely converted to residential use.
The Rising Sun
A small village pub in a former coal-mining district, which failed to reopen after the first 2020 lockdown and now appears to be up for sale for residential use.
The Rutland Arms
A well-located pub in the centre of picturesque Baslow village, with its own car park, that surely has potential for reopening. I recall it being a Mansfield tied house in the past.
The Crown
This large white-painted corner pub in a Derbyshire mining village makes a poignant sight in the Autumn sunshine.
The Red Lion
A typical modern suburban pub whose situation on a major road junction has made it eminently suitable for conversion to a Tesco Express.
The Station Hotel
An imposing redbrick corner pub probably dating from around the turn of the last century, situated in a former mining village. It looks rather smarter on the 2009 StreetView image than on my recent picture. Situated close to the well-known Creswell Crags beauty spot.

The Angel
Just round the corner from the White Swan, this Brewer’s Tudor pub shown on StreetView in 2008 has now become Bolsover Antiques. Bolsover seems to have suffered particularly badly from pub closures, with three recently lost on or just off the central square, although the former premises of “The Keep Sports Bar” almost next door have now become Wetherspoon’s Pillar of Rock.
The Wheel
A four-square, cream-painted pub on the main street of this attractive village south-west of Derby near the Toyota plant. On the StreetView image from 2009 it is displaying banners saying “Under New Management” and “Finest Cask Ales and Lagers”, but now is sadly de-signed and with peeling paintwork.
The White Swan
An attractive double-gabled stone-built pub in the centre of this small former mining town noted for its magnificent 17th century castle.
