The Swan & Sugar Loaf

The Swan & Sugar Loaf, Croydon, Surrey

An impressive building with an unusual name, situated on the Brighton Road on the south side of the town. It was built in 1896 for local brewers Page and Overton, but closed in 2010 and has now become a Tesco Express.

The Duke of Cambridge

The Duke of Cambridge, New Malden, Surrey

A large inter-wars pub originally built by Charringtons Brewery, situated next to a flyover on the Kingston Bypass. It now serves as a branch of Krispy Kreme Donuts.

The Burn Bullock

The Burn Bullock, Mitcham, Surrey

A former coaching inn dating back to the 18th century. Formerly the King’s Head, it was run by cricketer Burn Bullock and his wife until he died in 1954 and was renamed in his honour on her retirement in 1975. It closed in 2013 and was severely damaged by fire in 2024.

The Robin Hood

The Robin Hood, Guildford, Surrey

A compact backstreet pub on a street running parallel to and just to the south of the town’s main High Street.

The Royal Oak

The Royal Oak, Haslemere, Surrey

An attractive tile-hung pub in a wooded area to the north-west of the town. There are now plans to demolish it and build houses on the site.

The Kingfisher

The Kingfisher, Ewell, Surrey

A modern corner pub in the middle of a large housing estate with no nearby competition which, perhaps surprisingly, ended up being acquired by Oxfordshire pub company (and former brewery) Brakspear's.

The Worcester Park Tavern

The Worcester Park Tavern, Worcester Park, Surrey

A big inter-wars suburban pub right opposite Worcester Park station in the South-West London commuter belt, in a location that surely is not lacking in potential trade. Still open on StreetView, it is reported here to have been occupied by squatters.

The Royal Hotel

The Royal Hotel, Guildford, Surrey

A large 19th century pub in the northern suburbs of the town, still with its Courage sign. Apparently in recent years it was popular with army personnel.

The Gladstone

The Gladstone, South Norwood, Surrey

On a rundown suburban shopping street, very “London” with its cramped corner site and characteristic yellow-grey stock bricks.
