The Sundowner

The Sundowner, Hough Green, Lancashire

A characteristic post-war estate pub situated on the western side of Widnes. StreetView indicates that it closed at some time between 2008 and 2012, and now appears to have been converted to residential use.

The Old Dog

The Old Dog, Preston, Lancashire

A traditional city-centre pub that in its latter years operated as a late-night venue, only opening at 11 pm. It closed in July 2018.

The Red Lion

The Red Lion, Leigh, Lancashire

A small white-painted street-corner pub on the north side of the town, which was severely damaged by fire in March of this year.

The Broughton

The Broughton, Salford, Lancashire

A monumental former Whitbread pub in a run-down inner-urban area. Now the Zabka ethnic supermarket.

The Eagle & Child

The Eagle & Child, Wharles, Lancashire

A rather forlorn-looking former Boddingtons pub in an isolated rural local in the middle of the Fylde peninsula, an area where a lot of nearby pubs have also closed.

The Running Pump

The Running Pump, Catforth, Lancashire

A former Robinson’s tied house in an out-of-the-way location in the Fylde countryside. It seems to have been a victim of lockdown and had closed by the time the StreetView image was taken in 2021.

The Ellesmere Inn

The Ellesmere Inn, Eccles, Lancashire

A former Holt’s pub in a tucked-away location on the west side of the town in the shadow of the M60/M602 junction.

The Crown

The Crown, Salford, Lancashire

A pub with a distinctive tiled frontage and arched windows, located just over the Salford boundary from Manchester city centre, and now used as a massage parlour and nail salon.

The Grapes

The Grapes, Heaton Norris, Lancashire

A back-street pub tucked away in an area of mostly modern housing, which had been about the last pub standing in an area where they were once numerous. It was reputedly the model for the Grapes in the TV series Early Doors.

The Saddle Inn

The Saddle Inn, Bartle, Lancashire

A white-painted Thwaites pub with a very large car park on the rural western fringe of Preston. The road it stands on appears to have been cut off by the new A582 link. It was demolished in October 2022, to be replaced by a a garage, coffee shop and Greggs.

The Owd Tatts

The Owd Tatts, Chadderton, Lancashire

A white-painted pub with an unusual name on a back road on the south-west side of Oldham. There are now plans to demolish it and build a convenience store on the site.

The Hope

The Hope, Heaton Norris, Lancashire

An imposing redbrick pub on the main A6 north of Stockport town centre, still bearing lettering for Hardy’s Crown Brewery, who were eventually taken over by Bass. It was later the home of the Fool Hardy micro-brewery, and it is reported thatit is now going to be converted into a drive-thru branch of the Harry Ramsden’s fish and chip shop chain.

The Windmill

The Windmill, Ormskirk, Lancashire

A three-storey redbrick pub on the eastern side of the town that once had its own bowling green. After a long period of lying derelict, it is now to be converted into flats.

The Cock & Trumpet

The Cock & Trumpet, Halebank, Lancashire

A post-war pub set well back from the road, situated about a mile away from the Beehive on what was once the main A562 between Widnes and Liverpool. The site has since been redeveloped for housing.

The Muncaster Arms

The Muncaster Arms, Bootle, Lancashire

A monumental Victorian pub, roofless and open to the skies, marooned in an area of run-down industrial premises just inland form the docks. The image dates from 2009; it is still there, in an ever-worsening state of dereliction, in 2023.

The Pagefield

The Pagefield, Wigan, Lancashire

A monumental, ornate late Victorian or Edwardian pub situated in a residential area to the north-west of the town centre. In its latter years it was dubbed “The Famous Pagefield” which was a common practice with Greenall’s brewery. This is the 1000th entry on this blog, and prompted a post on my main blog.

The Withy Trees

The Withy Trees, Preston, Lancashire

A substantial pub on the north side of the city, situated at right angles to the road. Before closure, it was reputed to have the outdoor drinking area in Preston. It closed in July 2019 following the sale of the business by Greene King to a business called Norani Education, and it is now to become an Islamic centre.

The Beehive

The Beehive, Halebank, Lancashire

A long, white-painted pub just out into the countryside on what was once the main road between Widnes and Liverpool before the “Speke Road” was built.

The Horseshoe

The Horseshoe, Whiston , Lancashire

A neat inter-wars cottage-style pub with pitched roofs, now converted to a Tesco Express. According to StreetView, it closed some time between 2009 and 2012.

The Queens Arms

The Queens Arms, Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire

A redbrick street-corner pub close to the BAe Systems shipyard, which appears to have been closed for a long time and is now sprouting vegetation.
