A small street corner pub just to the east of the town centre with an impressive tiled facade advertising Gartside’s Ales, now used by Domino’s Pizza.

The Hoyle Mill Inn

The Hoyle Mill Inn, Barnsley, Yorkshire

A surprisingly shallow pub situated on a main road to the north-east of the town centre. There are now plans to convert it to a mental health support hub. Note the very rare twin-steer Ford Focus in the foreground of the StreetView image.

The Wing Half

The Wing Half, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire

A modern estate pub on the south-east side of the town, close to the Cheshire Oaks outlet village, named after locally-born footballer Joe Mercer. It closed in 2010, but there were attempts to convert it for residential use, which have now been abandoned, leading to plans for its demolition.

The De Lacey Hotel

The De Lacey Hotel, Bradford, Yorkshire

A modern, stone-faced pub, built in the 1970s by Tetley’s and situated on the south-east side of the city on the main road heading towards Wakefield. The building is now occupied by Nangla Furniture.

The Roundhead

The Roundhead, Peterborough, Northamptonshire

Befitting its name, a particularly grim and functional-looking pub situated in what appears to be the middle of a business park. It originally had windows along the top of the ground floor which have now been tinned up. It has been closed since 2012 and there are now plans, unsurprisingly, to convert it into flats.

The Duke’s Head

The Duke’s Head, Hythe, Kent

A white-painted, L-shapred pub at the western end of the town close to a bridge over the Royal Military Canal. It has been closed since 2016 and is now to be turned into apartments, with a café or restaurant on the ground floor.

Brindley’s Lock

Brindley’s Lock, Tunstall, Staffordshire

A charactecteristic 1980s estate pub at the extreme north end of Stoke-on-Trent. It closed early in 2022 and there are now fears locally that the site will be redeveloped for social housing. “The owner, Stockport-based Robinson's Brewery, said the venue did not fit its current business model.” It is still open on StreetView.

The Black Bull

The Black Bull, Middleton, Lancashire

A handsome four-square redbrick pub on Rochdale Road on the north side of the town. The premises are now used as a surgery by Vets4Pets. The inscription above the door reads “Rebuilt AD 1893”.

The Salem

The Salem, Sunderland, Durham

A functional redbrick pub in the Hendon district on the south side of the city. It was once popular with students before the university campus was relocated away from the area, but has been closed since 2006. Plans have now been approved to convert it to apartments.

The Haynook

The Haynook, Rotherham, Yorkshire

An unusually impressive post-war estate pub in the Kimberworth district of the town, with drum-shaped extensions on either side of the central block. Permission has now been granted for it to be demolished due to its poor state. The chap in the foreground with his carrier bag has now been immortalised on StreetView!

The Cross Keys

The Cross Keys, Canterbury, Kent

An attractive white-painted street-corner pub on the south-east side of the city. It has been closed for more than three years because of a structural issue, but planning permission has now been granted for a major refurbishment.

The Unicorn

The Unicorn, Cardiff, Glamorgan

An attractive farmhouse-style pub in the St Mellons district on the north-east side of the city, which is reported to have been left to rot by pub company Star Pubs & Bars. It is still open on StreetView - the image is taken from the newspaper article.
