The Blue Bell, Wilmslow, Cheshire
A modern pub – presumably a rebuild of an older one – in a prosperous residential area. Once a Boddingtons house, it’s been a Majestic Wine Warehouse for a number of years now. The BMW dealership across the road takes its name from the former pub.
You're right it was a rebuild of an earlier pub, the Blue Bell Hotel, which was on the same plot but closer to the main road. For a while the original Blue Bell Hotel was a Clarke's pub (Reddish Vale Stockport) before Boddingtons bought out Clarkes in 1962. I think the 'new' Blue Bell (above) was built in 1970s. There had been a public house on the site going back to the 1800's at least according to historical maps.
ReplyDeleteMy family were publicans there in the 1800's.
DeleteMy ancestors also ran the Blue Bell between 1841 and approx 1871 !!
DeleteSo were mine >>>James Willocks approx 1841 to 1871
Deletewhat year was the new blue bell opened
ReplyDeleteThe previous comment says the 1970s. I'd suggest the late 60s or early 70s from the general style, but I've only lived in this area since 1985 so don't specifically remember.
ReplyDeleteI remember the old Blue Bell pub from when I lived in Wilmslow as a child on Manchester Road with my grandparents. It looked like an old detached house.
