Recording the slow, sad death of the British pub
A four-square street-corner pub to the south-west of the town centre, still bearing Higson’s livery.
Funnily enough drove past the Vale this afternoon. Remember drinking there with affection before Tranmere footy games. A GBG regular in the late 70s it sold Higsons Mild, Bitter and Draught Bass. The latter two vied for which smelt the most of sulphur. Excellent beers. This pub will never re-open.
Update: Now in course of refurbishment, presumably as flats. The fascia has been removed to reveal the original tiling which states 'Mellor's Vale Hotel'.
